Baby Sleep 101: Creating Peaceful Nights (For You & Your Little One)

Let’s be real: when you have a baby, “sleep like a baby” sounds like a cruel joke. Newborns wake often, moms get little rest, and nights can feel like endless cycles of rocking, feeding, and bouncing.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Here’s how to build healthy sleep habits for your baby—and keep your sanity, too.

1. Understand Your Baby’s Sleep Needs

In the first few months, babies sleep 14–17 hours a day—but in short stretches. It’s totally normal for sleep to be broken and irregular. Over time, they learn to sleep longer at night.

Rough guide:

  • Newborns (0–2 months): Sleep in 2–4 hour windows
  • 3 months+: May start giving you longer stretches at night (yay!)

2. Create a Soothing Bedtime Routine

Routine = magic. Doing the same calming steps every evening helps your baby associate those cues with sleep.

Simple routine idea:

  • Warm bath with Aleen Mild Baby Bath
  • Gentle massage with Aleen Baby Oil
  • Soft lullaby or white noise
  • A cuddle and quiet room

Keep the lights dim and voices soft. Babies love calm and predictability.

3. Safe Sleep = Better Sleep

Your baby’s sleep environment matters a lot. Always follow safe sleep guidelines:

  • Lay baby on their back to sleep
  • Use a firm, flat mattress with no pillows, bumpers, or toys
  • Keep the crib close to your bed (but not co-sleeping if unsafe)

Tip: Dress baby in layers instead of using loose blankets. Use breathable fabrics.

4. Watch for Sleep Cues

Yawn? Rub eyes? Turn head away? These are early signs of tiredness. Don’t wait too long to start bedtime, or you’ll face an overtired (read: cranky) baby.

Common sleepy signs:

  • Slower movements
  • Staring into space
  • Fussiness (that’s a late sign—start earlier if you can!)

5. Make Night Wakings Less Stimulating

It’s okay (and expected) for your baby to wake during the night. When they do, keep things low-key:

  • No bright lights (a soft nightlight is perfect)
  • Minimal talking or eye contact
  • Quietly feed, change diaper (use Aleen Diapers for less leaks), and gently settle back to sleep

This teaches baby that nighttime = sleep time, not playtime.

6. Be Patient With Yourself

No two babies are alike. Some sleep “through the night” at 2 months, others at 12. It’s not a competition. You’re not doing anything wrong.

Remember:

  • You’re learning your baby, and they’re learning you.
  • Naps are gold—for baby and mom. Take them when you can.
  • It’s okay to ask for help. Tired moms deserve support, too.
